What is the lake of fire burning with brimstone

The lake of fire burning with brimstone is a very scary thought for millions of people.

Does it scare you too?

Do you believe that sinners who don't except God will burn forever and ever in the lake of fire buning with brimstone where they will be tortured with NO mercy at all?

Is there a hell? If so, where is it, and when do the wicked people go there to receive their punisment?

Do you believe in the resurrection of the dead?

There are so many different beliefs about what will happen to sinners who don't repent. Why are there so many different biefs about the fate of the wicked? Where does all the confusion come from?

There are many popular beliefs about the fate of unrepentant sinners. Why such confusion? What are the Bible answers? Here is the truth about hell!

One of the most common beliefs about hell is unrepented sinners burning in this hot flaming lake of fire burning with brimstone that will burn forever and ever and never burn them up.

I believed this same traditional belief growing up in our church, but this theory just didn’t add up to me. I asked myself many times, “What kind of God is capable of something like this?

I ended up searching for the answers that made sense to me, NOT continuing to believe everything I'm being taught without doing the research for myself.

I was very aware that I'm responsible for my own salvation, so It's critical for me to get the answers and the FULL truth once and for all before it's too late.

I asked myself many times...

Is this the Loving God that the Bible teach about?

Why would he design this NEVER ending lake of fire burning with brimstone for sinners?

Didn’t the Bible say that Everlasting LIFE was ONLY promised to the Righteous people?

The last time I checked that’s exactly what I read, John 3:36  says “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall NOT see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.”

John 6 :47 says “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.” Ok  It’s clear the righteous people will have everlasting life,  So I guess the question is, “What will happen to the ones that DON’T believeth?

Ok I’m getting ahead of myself here, that’s another post, we’ll discuss that topic in another post, but right now we’re going to chat about what hell really is. I mean the facts of the Bible.

The Bible Gives the Location of Hell

What you're about to read may be hard to believe. . .

We're going to discuss the place the Bible calls hell. I want to show you some solid Bible evidence for the Bible definition of hell, and it may not be what you’re thinking, so please DON’T take this lightly, because if this is true (which it is) you could be in some MAJOR DANGER  if you don’t at least have an open mind and do the research yourself.

To get the true meaning of the Bible, you have to first get the true meaning of the original form of the Bible, which was originally written in Hebrew and Greek.

Keep in mind that the Bible translators did their best when translating the original language to English, meaning they came as close as possible to finding the English words that came the closest to the meanings of the original Hebrew and Greek words.

The Bible speaks of three types of hells. Here’s the three types hells and definitions of each one…

Sheol and Hades- Abode of the dead, the underworld, "the common GRAVE of mankind, or pit. Sheol and Hades (the grave) is the place the righteous and unrighteous goes after death, and stays until resurrection..

The word "hades" was in fact substituted for "sheol" when the Hebrew scriptures were translated into Greek. In the Hebrew Bible "Tanakh" (old testament), the Hebrew word “Sheol” was used 60 times and was translated in the English version as “hell.”

Tartaroo or Tartarus- The original Greek word translated hell in the new testament. This word only appears one time in the Bible, which is the place (hell) where the sinning angels are being held until time of judgement.  (2 Peter 2:4) . For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell (Tartaroo), and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment.)

Gehenna- The burning garbage dump near  Jerusalem, which is called  Valley of Hinnom.” It is mentioned in the Bible 13 times in 11 different verses. Dead bodies of criminals, the carcasses of animals and other things were thrown into that fire.

Gehenna represents what will happen to sinners who don’t repent of their sins. Jesus spoke  about what would happen to them in  Matthew  10:28 “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

Now ‘hell’ in this verse is translated from the Greek work ‘Gehenna’ which represents what will happen to the unrepented sinners.

The Gehenna fire is the type of fire that burns up completely whatever is thrown into it, so it’s clear that the unrepented sinners will burn up in this type of fire.

In Rev. 20:14,  gehenna (hell) is clearly described as the SECOND DEATH. Death is so EXTREME, that even death and hades (grave) is thrown into the lake of fire burning with brimstone.

Did you know that the destruction of the cities Sodom and Gomorrah is used as an example for sinners who will suffer the punishment of eternal fire?

Well that’s what the Bible says. See Jude 7  “Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.

Now when you really think about this, you’ll see that the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, which were destroyed with fire are NOT still burning today, those people are obviously dead and has been burned to ashes by eternal fire. See that is the prime example of what’s going to happen to sinners who DON’T repent.of  their sins.

Look what Peter said in 2 Peter 2:6 about Sodom and Gomorrorah,  And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an example unto those that after should live ungodly;

Did you turn to the verses in your Bible while reading this blog?

Doing so will truly help you put the sciptures together to help you and anyone with an open mind to understand the Bible more so there will be NO confusion in mind.

The lake of fire burning with brimstone and any part of the Bible can be easily understood when you know the true meaning. God is NOT the author of confusion.

If god is all knowing, and he knows his children will burn for all eternity, then why does a loving god still create them anyway?

Great post.

I have struggled for some time with a 'weak' doctrine of hell.

I have come to a similar conclusion.

The opposite of eternal life is not eternal life in pain and torment in 'hell'.

Thanks for your clarity, we don't need to preach fear to draw people to the saving beauty of Christ.

Thank you, few people are aware of the origin and meaning of hell. I truely believe that those who does not repent will feel the wrath of God on judgement. To those who feel that it can easily be summed up, dont you feel anything for those lost who's searching for the truth that does not understand the meaning of everything in the bible. We as christians should live like Jesus, and He had no problem teaching those who hunger for Gods word. May God bless u all and the author of this blog may u experience many blessings from our heavenly Father. Regards, Shanelle

There is no eternal hell. The bible does not say that there is such a place. The bible does not say all people have eternal souls. The bible does say that the human souls dies a second death. The first being the physical death. The second death is for the souls that are not given eternal life. If every soul has eternal life from the start, why would the reward or result of salvation be eternal life? How can the creation all be redeemed if there is an eternal hell. The idea of eternal torment for people was made up by the church to scare people. They had to add the idea of all souls being created in an eternal state to make this thing work. They never explain why Paul never uses the word hell in all of Romans, uses heaven only once as it pertains to people, and does use "death" and "life" countless times. Charles Schwartz

people, lets be careful how we treat the bible. Yes fire is used as an allusion to the judgment of God on sodom. But many times more generally it refers to the very wrath of God and thus God is called a consuming fire. I agree that the lake of fire is not a literal fire burning. But to say the punishment and suffering of that place, is temporal ( annihilation) does not fit the bible's language of eternal damnation. eg Mark 9:42-47, Matt 25:46 each all have eternal suffering involved. Even the jude 7 passage. this should tell us of the evil nature of sin that against God, only a eternal suffering is adequate justice for the evil of sin. Hence rather than take from the word, lets see the great evil of sin as it is against a God far greater than we are .Amen

tour teaching is nothing new. taking verses in this case one verse 2 peter 2:6 out of contest to try to prove a false teaching. you should continue reading in 2 peter v.9 read " the Lord.....knows how to hold the unrighteous for punishment in the day of judgment" jesus spoke more about hell during his earthly ministry than heaven lastly God is Good and He doesn't send anyone to hell people send themselves to hell by rejection God's free gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ.

God is not the author of confusion? I beg to differ. You guys need to read Luke 12. He has come to bring fire to this earth and oh how he wishes it was kindling now!

From now on, with a family of 5, it will be 3 against 2 and 2 against 3.

I was becoming a Christian but have started to realise that the God of the Israelites was a volcano. There are countless verses that suggest this. Hell...the lake of fire...the pit....that goes down below the earth.....was a volcano. Moses recieved thought he heard the voice of God but it was likely just the rumblings and bubblings of the volcano. Please look into it. I wish it was otherwise but I'm afraid I'm losing my faith.

The doctrine of lake of fire as a place of eternal torment is false.
1. When it states Satan and death will be hurled down there is obviously not literal. Reasoning from the scriptures will tell you that death is an intimate concept and Satan is a spirit creature. Fire could not literally burn a spirit creature: see example of shadrach michach and abbedigo (wrong spelling)
The angel went inside the burning furnace to protect them from being burned and dying. So lake of fire means second death not tormented death

I think you are right on track, man is forever trying to improve on God's perfection and falling short.Jesus taught a God of love and compassion and pagan converts brought their pagan ideas into their new faith with them and the new christian religion became a monstrous deception. The truth is in the Bible but we need to dig past "the man taught" truths to reconcile our beliefs with God's truth. We must "Study to show ourself approved unto God" 2Tim.

Mark 9:43If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than to have two feet and be thrown into hell.d 47And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell, 48where

I don't know what to believe in anymore but I'm not going to believe that most people that have lived are going to suffer eternal torment in some lake of fire. I also don't believe that the Bible is Holy inspired. I think mankind (some) have always been evil and I think if they've done evil things they could also make up evil stuff to (like this eternal suffering thing).

As a child growing up it was easy to believe in God and Jesus. It wasn't until I was in my early 50s that it dawned on me that maybe the gospels and the Bible was not true and that maybe it was made up by man. Most claim to be Christians are not real Christians and haven't the faintest idea of how they could be anyway according to what Jesus said. Jesus basically said that one is to turn in all his tickets and that means turn his back on the world and all it's temptations. He also said that he left the comforter (the Holy Spirit). I was thinking a good test would be to pray and tell God you give up all you have (family, friends, money and possessions and dreams and things you love to do in your life) to follow Jesus. Then if the Holy Ghost comes into you - well, I'm wondering if this would mean it's all for real. Most people would not be able to turn in all their tickets. I have never been able to do this. I just won't believe in some kind of lake of fire and eternal punishment and suffering. Plus the genesis story has pretty well been proven to have not been the case as science has proved. To me whether God or Jesus really exist is still a big question. If one believes then I guess they have to believe in the devil to. I question the truth in all of it now.

Plus Christian religions also make big money off of all this God and the Bible stuff. Even Jesus said in the gospels that you can't serve God and money and especially the 2 biggest Christian religions do serve money. I think all of it was made up for the purpose of money riches. Plus look at all that evil stuff they did to people. People are so crazy over religious beliefs that they are willing to hurt and kill people if they don't believe. And that would be the total opposite of loving people. Even the words of Jesus suggest violence and getting rid off all the no goods. Read the sermon on the mount. It's down right scary. Every time I start to read the gospels I have to stop because I get so psychologically bothered over it. I've wasted much of my life worrying about all this stuff. And look how many people have ended up in the crazy house not to mention all the people who've killed themselves over God, devil and the Bible.

What I read is that it is Satan and his disciples that will burn forever, that makes sense to me because Satan and his disciples(other fallen angels ate of the tree of life that is eternal life.

Folk's, don't believe everything you see and hear.

Death and hell shall be cast into the Lake of fire!

Can ANYONE explain away Isaiah 66:23-24?

After reading it folk,s let God be true, and every man a liar!

The same God that kept the 3-Hebrew boys in the fiery furnace from being affected by the fire, is the same God that will preserve the wicked in the fire to burn Forever and Forever being tormented with fire and brimstone.

Save yourself from this untoward's God, perverse and wicked generation.

Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized everyone of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost Acts 2:38-40; 4:10-12 KJV.

Peter, obeyed what Jesus taught St. Luke 24:47-49; Acts 1:8; 2:38-40; 4:10-12. The Samaritans received what Jesus taught Acts 8:12-17. The Gentiles were commanded to obey what Jesus taught Acts 10:44-48. Apostle Paul re-baptized John's disciples because of what Jesus taught Acts 19:1-7 KJV.

If history is correct, the apostles of Jesus Christ did not omit St. Matthew 28:19; they just obeyed the only thing that Jesus Christ told them to do St. Luke 24:44-49; Acts 2:36-40; 4:10-12; Gal. 1:8-9; 2nd Cor. 4:3-6; Eph. 4:5; Acts 1:8 KJV.

Revelation says those who take the mark or worship the beast will be tormented by fire and brimstone. The smoke of their torment rises forever and they have no rest day or night. It can't be explained much plainer than that. Death and hell is also put there. All those not written in the Lamb's Book of Life.

mc said...

I used to believe in eternal fire, eternal torment but when I was learning to read from the greek I found out that It's not eternal after all. How can second death means living eternally in torment? It really does makes sense now.

Anonymous said...

Here's my two cents. I think that we assume that the souls of man who die without Christ is tormented forever and ever, day and night because of the tradition of what we learned in church according to someone else's interpretation of the bible. Some people believe that hell is just the grave and that Jesus was only speaking in parables about the rich man in hell. Some people believe that it is literal. Clearly and according to the bible, death and hades (hell) is thrown into the lake of fire. It also says that satan and the false prophet is thrown into the lake of fire. I assume that since satan counterfeits everything God does, this means that the false prophet is an inhuman spirit or another name for satan. (Kind of like a trinity?)
As I have read in the King James Bible, anyone who's name was not found in the Lambs Book of Life will have their "PART" in the lake of fire. It says there will weeping and gnashing of teeth. In my opinion, I think the weeping and gnashing of teeth are the saints who will mourn for their loved ones.
"Part" is the keyword that tells me, the second death means the souls of the damned are forever put to an end. And then, Jesus will wipe the tears from our eyes.

so for those out there who just do not believe in God do you just have nothing better to do with your time than get on here and hinder people from trying to learn about something important to them, is video games real? no, but they still interest people same as movies, so if you feel this is all bologna and is false then why are you wasting your time trying to argue just move on and find whats important in your life and stop hating us for living for a cause whether you believe it is real or not, thank you

We are loosing focus on the real reason Sheol was created...

It was originally created by Yahweh specifically for Satan and the fallen angels, not man kind.

It wasn't until Adam and Eve committed the original sin, then man kind him/herself were also to be thrown into torment...

Its not the literal fire that will torment these lost souls, but something much much more horrendous will cause them the gnashing of teeth, the tearing at themselves in agony....

What torments them beyond any pain we can imagine is their Separation from The Lord Who Sanctifies, YAHWEH M'KADDESH, it is knowing that they denied the Messiah Yahushua for the temporary lust of the material world...

The torment of their separation from an eternal righteous Father...Will be excruciating...

I believe the unsaved will burn up quickly, then be dead forever,
thats what god meant when he said second death and that he will destroy both body and soul.

You should be ashamed. If I were to say such things, if remain anonymous too!

There is no Satan - the word is purely an untranslated word from the Greek and should just be translated as "adversary"
There are no "fallen angels" - God would have dealt with them long ago, by demoting them to ordinary individuals.
There is no "original sin". God put Adam and Eve out of the garden of Eden because they had grown to maturity and were due to leave anyway to "go forth and multiply" in the beautiful new world he had just created for them! Did you expect them to spend the rest of their lives lazing in luxury and being kept in 5-star accommodation for free?
We have to try to distinguish between reality and false religious interpretation, designed specifically to subdue us and subjugate us to their rule!
Jesus taught us forgiveness and pardon for our sins - not eternal pain and suffering!
Have faith - all will be revealed in due course and until then, we have no chance of interpreting the "Lake of Fire and Brimstone" But when you do find out what it is, be assured it will not mean anything like what it appears to mean!!

“WOW,” multitudes upon multitudes of humans that will suffer “eternal torment” for 100 trillion years, and then another 100 trillion years, and then another 100 trillion years, and it goes on and on with no hope of it ever ending.

I am certain that each one of us, deep inside of our very being, know that something just does not add up concerning this picture. But, we just can't quite figure out what is it that we are not understanding correctly.

The true biblical teaching is neither the traditional Christian view of hell, nor the view of annihilation. Our great God is neither a great torturer nor a great annihilator, but He is the great Saviour of the world.

I have written upon this topic, but it is much too lengthy to post on this site. Below is a sample. If anyone would like a copy in it's original Word Document Format, feel free to e-mail me and request a copy, and I will e-mail you a copy.

What is the “GOOD NEWS” of the Gospel of Christ?
(Re-examining the widely held belief of “eternal torment” in “Hellfire”)

There are some Biblical topics which in order to get a better and clearer understanding of, require a lengthy Biblical explanation. This Biblical topic is certainly one of them. After all, there is certainly NOTHING MORE IMPORTANT than “our eternal purpose” & “our eternal destination!” Therefore, it is of the utmost importance for us to have a better and clearer Biblical understanding concerning this most important topic.

My purpose for this writing is to Biblically “expound” upon (1) “eternal torment” (2) “eternal annihilation” of our very being (3) to give a Biblical answer to the question “If there is no “eternal torment,” and if there is no “eternal annihilation” of our very being, then what are we being saved from, and what is our being here during this present time on earth really all about?”

I was a Christian for 38 years before the Lord opened up my Spiritual understanding to see more clearly some Biblical truths that I had not properly understood in regards to the finished work of Christ on the Cross.

To teach that when the wicked are cast into Hell they burn up and disappear in total destruction is error.
Hell is a place of eternal punishment and agony and excruciating pain and burning :
Here Jesus said in Mark 9 : 43, 44 “And If thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that NEVER shall be quenched. Where their worm DIETH NOT, and the FIRE IS NOT QUENCHED.”

(for those that don’t study or know the Holy Bible let me assure you the “cut it off” part, Jesus was speaking metaphorically; Jesus Christ taught using parables, spiritual stories, examples, metaphors and he also used symbolism. A lot of the truths Jesus taught required the help of the Spirit of God (the Holy Spirit) to reveal the meanings. These are spiritually discerned teachings that are revealed to the ones who believe, accept and love God putting their trust in Him.

There are many more places God; Jesus Christ talks about the reality of an eternal hell making it clear so no one can teach falsehood in the matter.

Just do a “topical study” to find the rest : go to the back of the Holy Bible that has a Concordance (it’s A - Z) and look up hell, then look up all the scriptures about hell.

Never just go by what humans put in front of you, seek the truth for yourself because people will not show you all of the Scriptures and will sometimes leave out elements of Biblical truth that make up the whole picture of a matter.

Also know that those that are in hell now (where they have been since their deaths in constant torment and pain will, at the end of time (after Jesus’ Second Coming) during Judgement Day enter what God calls the “second death” which is the Lake of Fire burning with brimstone :
Revelation 20 : 14. “And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.”

Revelation 14 : 11 “And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up FOR EVER AND EVER: and they HAVE NO REST DAY NOR NIGHT...”

This lake of fire the second death is the same place God will throw Satan into :
Revelation 20 : 10 “And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and SHALL BE TORMENTED DAY AND NIGHT FOR EVER AND EVER.”

God bless you all.

It is important to understand that the Lake of Fire is not a physical Lake of Fire. The Biblical phrase “Lake of Fire” is symbolic for a Spiritual Lake of Fire which is representative of the FIRE of God’s Spirit that is going to do a transforming work of “Divine Purification” in each individual that comes before the Great White Throne Judgment. This transforming work from God’s Spirit will give these individuals a full understanding of God’s Boundless Love for them and the entire human race. (Note: The Scriptures do not reveal how long that this process will take)

I have written a 26 page article that Biblically deals with this subject extensively. If anyone would like a copy, feel free to e-mail me and ask for a copy and I will e-mail you a copy.

Here is my understanding."God The father did not create Hell for his creation {MANKIND}He only created Hell for Satan and his Demons. That is why it is such a burden to God when one of His Best Creations go there, and for the record God does not send any of us to Hell We send our self. There are two gifts that God gave us and these are the greatest Gifts anyone can have Here in the physical body and they go as Followed #1.Love #2.Free will. That is why people say you cannot make someone love you.AND That means we can either love God or Reject God it is our Choice. But Choices have consequences one way or another.I believe God Sent His only Son here on earth to help us make the rite choice,So God did not have to see one of His Children go to that terrible place because it burdens him that much.No one ever wants to see there child go through suffering and torment.Okay here is the truth,Jesus is the Son of god,There is no possible way we could ever see god without going through Jesus Christ OUR Lord and savior.John 14:6 "I am the way the truth and the life no one comes to the father except through me.Good works alone will not get someone into the kingdom of God,Having Faith in Jesus Christ is the only way to the kingdom of heaven.John 3:16"For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son and whoever shall believe in him shall not parish but have everlasting life."Repenting of our sins and Faith are the only way.so we can either love Jesus or Reject him that is our choice however if we reject him we will be sent to the lake that is burning with fire and brimstone. So it is our choice overall. With that being said God can do whatever he pleases but he gave us the gift of choice and reasoning .And Gods ways are just and rite. And Gods never strays from his word and promises.Heaven or Hell which one will you choose?

Any speculation as to the meaning of the lake of fire and brimstone is just an opinion; MERE SPECULATION!

There is NO HELL. God would not punish someone with death (or even eternal pain) - even we common people have now more or less outlawed capital punishment!!

He might send us back to try again, in a different body, until we finally learn to live our lives correctly. So we have to die at least one more time to make it to The Kingdom of God and that is assuming we are nearly perfect now.

All the evidence points to REBIRTH rather than resurrection:

1) "Unless a man be BORN AGAIN he cannot enter the Kingdom of Heaven"
2) "(Then) you will know the truth, and the truth will set you FREE

My name is Alan Finch. JESUS became my Lord and Saviour in April of 1976.

In John 12:32, JESUS clearly states that He is going to draw ALL people to Himself! Not a portion of mankind, but ALL of mankind.

In John 6:44, JESUS clearly states that nobody can come to Him, except the Father draws that person to Him. If you are a true Christian, you only became a Christian as the result of the God’s Spirit drawing you to JESUS. Don’t kid yourself, you only came to JESUS because God’s Spirit drew you to JESUS!

In the present, and in the future, God has His own timing when He will draw each individual to Himself.

GOD HAS NOT FAILED IN HIS ORIGINAL PLAN FOR ALL OF MANKIND. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR GOD TO FAIL IN ANYTHING!

I have spent the last several years in Biblically expounding in a 31 page document that I have put together on the truth of there being no eternal suffering in a Lake of Fire for anyone.

If anyone would be interested in a copy of my document, email me at: (candy33alan@aol.com), and I will email you a copy.
